Dirty Jobs

I think the best ad I've seen this week so far, is Discovery's "Dirty Jobs".

Contracted by Discovery Communications and photographed by Roger Hagadone with help from Jane Choi, special effects artist. Art directed by Scott McDonald and Alison Medland.

On Roger's blog you can watch the dirty making of.

Top vintage computer ads

Discovered a top 20 of vintage computer ads from back in the days. See ads for Apple, Microsoft, Commodore and other retro machines. See Bill Gates smiling like a dork, or Apple inventing the personal computer - again. Apple invented the personal computer again about 3-4 more times since then.

Most of them are funny comparing to the advertising today, but when we will look back in 20 years at today's advertising, will we smile then?

Sound of color

If you like music and you like colors also, you will find the new campaign for Gap's Spring 2008 collection very nice.

Gap, the big American clothing company, together with the production company Rehab, approached five bands and singers and asked them to write a song based on a specific colour.
So we have The Blakes with blue, Dntel of The Postal Service with red, Swizz Beats was given green, lovely Marié Digby took on yellow and The Raveonettes opted for black/white.

Once all the songs were completed, five directors took on the job to create videos to accompany them, with just a rule in mind - that the video they create should reflect the colour associated with the track they've been given. The rest was up to the directors.

So as a result we can enjoy a dedicated website - SOUND OF COLOR with all the videos, making ofs, interviews, information about the bands and very useful information about the colours too. Also the songs can be downloaded to be enjoyed offline too (while on the subway maybe).
I like the most Marié Digby's song and also the very simple and nice video.

Great project to promote the Gap brand while promoting some indie artists, simply promoting colors and making original content.
And although I don't buy Gap, I like this kind of stuff and the brand.

Advertising of 2007

BusinessWeek magazine released on their website an insight article about the state of advertising in 2007.

Trends, case studies, slideshows and comments, in a full report for the US, UK, Australia and China advertising markets.

Advertising of 2007 overview
Advertising of 2007 UK
Advertising of 2007 Australia
Advertising of 2007 China

Some of the highlights this year included:
- Radiohead's album release and sale, directly from their website - a bold move and one that can kick-start a revolution in music distribution;
- Nike Plus campaign - a community website for runners, mixing two major brands: Nike's running shoes and Apple's iPod, into a whole new experience; won Cyber Grand Prix for best online advertising at Cannes Lions;
- Dove "Evolution" campaign generated a lot of buzz and also won at Cannes Lions Grand Prix for best viral execution;
- Sony "Colour like.no.other" campaign, with wonderful executions, generating a lot of viral buzz.

This year we've seen the rise of integrated campaigns, with more agencies offering 360 integrated services for their clients. It is becoming more of a trend really.

Internet advertising saw a great deal of success in the media market, with companies investing more in their online advertising and the giants like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! fighting for market share (Google was the undisputed winner for this category).
And the development of many online social networks sprung the need for online advertising in order to quickly capitalize on them. Facebook sold advertising space to Microsoft and also introduced their own advertising model, after opening the doors to more users and not just American students, thus becoming an international online social network.

2007 was a great year for the advertising industry. We've seen many changes and surely we can expect many more in 2008.

Audi R8

This microsite for Audi R8 is the best flash website I've seen in a while, but also one of the slowest I've seen in a while.

The old one won some awards and was a big hit at the time, but this one is more like the car and the advertising campaign.

First time I see a curved scroll bar used in a website plus After Effects video animation and Flash workframe as usual. And the music...

Great presentation.

Audi is investing a lot of time and effort into building the R8 car (assembled by hand!), so they launched a campaign called AUDI R8: The Slowest Car We've Ever Built! just to let people know about it so they will desire even more the new model.
The 90-second short film by BBH London features a group of Audi engineers putting together a R8 over the course of several days "from the very first bolt to the finished car."
See the making of Audi R8.

Website is developed by GT along with a full online campaign.

edit: R8, my bad.

Saturn rebranding spot

Saturn, an European electronics retailer undergone a re-branding campaign with help from Berlin agency Scholz & Friends and New York's 1stAveMachine.

1stAveMachine did a terrific job in delivering a new kind of robot more sexy and advanced. True to their motion graphics style, they delivered something else.
The results are amazing, considering all the robots I've seen and loved (think Cunningham's All Is Full of Love (1999) video for Björk or the work put into the movie I, Robot).

Arvind Palep, Director of this beauty mentioned: Every one has seen the transparent, plastic-looking, mechanical, nuts-and-bolts robot. We wanted to look into the future to take the concept to the next level.

Great TV spot, that will surely generate lots of buzz for Saturn.

Sony Bravia Pyramid

Have you been to Egypt lately? Yes?
Then you've seen the new spot for Sony Bravia specially made for Egypt?

Simply great!

ING Cont'ROL campaign

CAP released a new TV spot for ING's Cont'ROL advertising campaign started in February.

The TV ad features 3D characters animated using stop-motion techniques and directed by Mike Mort.

The story behind it, that a team of trained bunnies, accountant bees, a piggy bank and the Chinese entrepreneurs will work full time to multiply your money, its a fresh and funny take on increasing revenue by offering a higher interest on your money.

Simple idea, great exec and still fresh for this campaign. CAP is taking it to the next level. And congrats to ING for being this open and accepting this kind of ideas, a bold bank indeed.

This new take will run on air, print and online.
You can see the TV ad and print on CAP's website in their NEWS section.
