Meta Serif website

FontShop released a mini website for the new and wonderful Meta Serif.

There, you can read the story of this new typeface, see how people already used this typeface, some examples how Meta Sans and Meta Serif work together and you can even download the Glyph poster composed from all 709 glyphs of FF Meta Serif Pro.

Funkyou is back!

As I was saying, funkyou.ro is now back on track, with a full release of this platform

FunkYou stands for experiments and developing new ideas which I think is interesting, because not many designers publish experimental works, at least not in Romania...

The new website is now live and its got artists and studios features, interviews, a forum, job board and even a shop (with some help from Sunnyday)!
Looking good, looking fresh, designed by Stefan Lucut...

Hope this project will attract the attention of the Romanian design community, because there are some talented designers and artists in Romania that need to come out and show their work to the world.
And the idea of design workshops, plus Funkyou - the book featuring the best in experimental design are most welcome.

Good luck to the team behind Funkyou.ro. I hope this project will do just fine.

Funkyou platform

It seems that the old funkyou.ro website has some new owners and its making a comeback.

Funk You is a platform for experimental graphic design and will be the first magazine of its kind in Eastern Europe. Our aim is to present designers with the opportunity to express themselves without the constraints of a usual designer-client relationship.
Funk You stands for experiments and developing new ideas. Everything is possible and we want to encourage people to try a new way of thinking and creating. Funk You will feature both Romanian and international designers.

The guys at Citrus Design, with Stefan Lucut as an Art Director, are releasing through this new platform a quarterly magazine featuring artists and projects, the Funk You website and forum, a new website - minimalexperimental.com - that will organize monthly graphic design exhibitions, then some workshops and presentations organized three or four times a year.

I'll wait to see what the guys have prepared for us, but for now, all this looks very promising. Nice going guys!

Society of Digital Agencies

Adobe joined forces with a group of 18 worldwide digital agencies to form an industry association named Society of Digital Agencies - SoDA.

SoDA aims to be the voice of the interactive industry worldwide, advancing the industry through education, knowledge sharing and advocacy.

A very interesting initiative, that will discuss issues facing the world of digital marketing and design, like the distribution of content and the impact of technology on media budgets.

The founding agencies are: AgencyNet, Big Spaceship, Blitz Agency, Domani Studios, Exopolis, Firstborn Multimedia, Grupo W, iChameleon Group, IQ Interactive, Juxt Interactive, Lightmaker, Mind Comet, Odopod, Schematic, Struck, WDDG, WhittmanHart and 360i.

Agencies like group94, North Kingdom or AKQA should have been involved too, but for sure others will enter this association soon.

When powers like these are put together, great things should follow, so let us wait and see what they're up to, for now.

Corbis buys Veer

Corbis, the second largest stock photography provider, bought recently Veer, the Canadian stock provider of visual elements.

Moving more into Getty's market share, Corbis will keep the Veer brand separated, they say...

Veer is a well known distributor of visual elements including stock photography, illustration, footage and very fine fonts. It runs also a shop with its own t-shirts and bags and other hip stuff for designers and creative people and has the finest catalogs showcasing their offerings.
Corbis, a company owned by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, is a well known stock photography provider for editorial customers mostly.

Corbis will be segmenting now its businesses into four separate brands: Corbis, Corbis Rights Services, micropayment site SnapVillage, and Veer. In the past, when Corbis acquired other stock agencies, it integrated them into the Corbis brand.

This move comes after Getty introduced a multi-site strategy earlier this year following the acquisition of another royalty-free stock site - PunchStock. Getty now has three stock web sites: gettyimages.com, istockphoto.com and punchstock.com covering different markets and types of customers.

I was very surprised by this acquisition and I hope Veer will stay the same, just as great and useful as before.

Designers love Veer. Corbis better not mess with it and do some sudden changes. Actually, I don't know why Veer accepted to be bought in the first place? Oh well...

Cannes Design Lions 2008

The Cannes Lions festival will be having in 2008 also a Design section, the brand new Design Lions 2008.
This new section will honor the creative and innovative use of design for brand and product communication and development, with projects entered into three categories: Packaging Design, Brand Identity and Environmental Design. And yes, there will be a Design Grand Prix to be won.

Rodney Fitch, the Chairman & CEO of Fitch Worldwide, will be the Chief Chairman of the Jury for this section, so you will need to impress him.

Really interesting move from Cannes. They will be direct competitors to D&AD Awards now.

Creative Review thinks this stunt was pulled to take some of the cash away from D&AD Awards.
Oh well, competition is always good and it will be interesting to see what is the best design agency and what are the best design projects, next year in Cannes.

I also think Romanian design and branding agencies (Brandient, Grapefruit, etc.) will make it big in this event, given they've won already lots of international awards for Branding, Identity or Packaging design.
